A large, handsome chateau door overlay with this 18th-century oil on canvas depicting a scene from Greco-Roman mythology in a molded and carved oak paneled frame.
The combination of the woodwork and the finely executed real painting make this door overlay a highly decorative and qualitative piece.
The painting represents an episode from Greco-Roman mythology. In this episode, taken from Ovid's "Metamorphoses", Mercury, at Jupiter's behest, has just lulled the shepherd Argus to sleep with the sound of his flute, in order to deliver lo, Jupiter's lover, transformed into a white heifer and placed by Juno in Argus' care.
The protagonists occupy the entire foreground of the painting, in a clearing beside a river, accompanied by a few sheep on the left.
The painting, which had been restored in the past, has been reupholstered, and the old work has been perfectly executed. The paneled frame highlighting the painting is composed of 18th-century elements adapted to the painting in order to recreate its door-top appearance.
In view of its dimensions, this door overmantel, also known as a "trumeau de boiserie", must have been located in a château, above a double doorway.
All in good condition, ready for installation.
