Mario Vargas (1928-2017) - The villagers oil on wood circa 1973

We've always loved the work of Mario Vargas, a painter we met in the 1990s.

There's a kind of serenity in his figures, with their enveloping, protective lines, his palette of warm colours, and his highly distinctive glaze that brings transparency and depth.

A fine oil on wood, painted in 1973 and entitled Les Villageoises.

    Sizes unframed: H 31.88 Inches. - W 25.59 Inches.

    Sizes framed: H 42.12 Inches. - W 39.37 Inches.

    In fine original condition.

    Biography:

Mario Vargas: Born on December 1, 1928, in Sucre, Bolivia, and died on July 20, 2017 in La Verrière, Yvelines.

Mario Vargas spent his childhood with his mother. After her death, she remained present in almost all his paintings. She is the "earth-mother" of Indian mythology, with her enveloping, protective lines.

He studied at the Fine Arts School in Sucre.

After several trips and exhibitions in La Paz, São Paulo, Rio, Cuzco, and Lima, he left to study the restoration of old paintings in Madrid.

He travelled throughout Europe and finally settled in France, where he waited a few years before exhibiting. Since then, Mario Vargas has exhibited in Brazil, Monaco, Germany, Florida, Geneva...

Transparency and luminosity convey the intuitive understanding of the American Indians: symbiosis with Nature, perception of every moment, and inner peace. His compositions bear witness to this simple, reserved, and spiritual life.
