Biography: Wikipedia
Alexandre Defaux was born in Bercy, a commune then on the outskirts of ParisN 1. Mainly known for his oil paintings, Defaux also practiced pastel and watercolor. He is a figure of the second generation of painters of the Barbizon School in the lineage of Jean-Baptiste Corot—whose student he was—and Jean-François Millet. His early landscapes reflect the influence of Corot with large panoramic urban views and figures in Neapolitan peasant costume. He is known for his paintings of sunny farmyards filled with chickens or geese.
Our work is a pretty little painting representing a farmyard in a 19th century farm. Alexandre Defaux is a specialist in chicken paintings as mentioned above.
We find in this painting a touch of painting specific to the artist. The rendering of the walls of the unsealed stones, of the door of which we can perfectly feel the wood of the planks, adds to the realism of the scene.
