Always ready to intrude into feminine intimacy, like a stolen moment, observed from a keyhole, Delphin Enjolras gives us here a rare subject.
An elegant, naked, lying in the water, surrounded by flowers like a Nymph with water lilies, illuminated by the light of dawn.
Light, natural or artificial, always magnified by the artist, making it "his characteristic".

This magnificent pastel is in a very beautiful state of conservation. The colors are still very bright, a sign of perfect protection of the work since its origin.

    Signed bottom left.

All the photos were taken in natural light and without using filters (the last two at the end of the day, with ambient light).

Beautiful frame in wood and gilded stucco, with anti-UV protective glass.

    Dimensions:
    Without frame: 73 cm / 54 cm
    With frame: 91 cm / 72 cm

    Delphin Enjorlas (1857-1945)
Born in 1857, Delphin Enjolras grew up in an honorable family, descendant of an officer of Napoleon. Following the death of his mother, he moved with his family to Langogne in order to be closer to prestigious schools. His strong attraction to drawing quickly surfaced, and he trained in his art throughout his studies. However, he continued classical training, preparing for the entrance exams for the Vicinaux Services, but he did not like it. He then changed direction and entered the Beaux-Arts in Paris where he would learn from the greatest such as the painter and sculptor Gérôme or the painter of religious scenes, Dagnan-Bouveret.

He exhibited regularly at M. Farigoules, near his home, where he returned to paint. But it was the portrait of the prefect Bonnefoy Sibour that revealed him to the artistic world since he exhibited, after that, at the Salon des Artistes français for a few years.

In 1901, he became a Member of the Society of French Artists and was rewarded many times.

He left Paris during the two world wars and found refuge in Valence and Vendôme.

He began by painting landscapes of his home as well as portraits of his family. He regularly returned to the countryside where he grew up to paint landscapes and villages.

Then, he changed his subject and made pastel portraits, notably those of women from the aristocracy of the Rhône such as Madame de Geoffre, de Monteynard or de Lafarge. He believed that this method highlighted their grace. It was his many pastel portraits that earned him the nickname "painter of reflections", thanks to his luminous paintings, in warm tones and varied colors, lit by the sun, flames or lamps. He also painted nudes, interiors, varying between pastel, oil and watercolor.

After being revealed by the portrait of the Prefect, Delphin Enjorlas was commissioned many others such as that of General de Sonis, Admiral de Fayrolle or General Thomas.

Then, the demand changed and the Ardèche MP painted landscapes inspired by the Camargue: The Return of the Bulls, Saint-Gilles Market, and others.
However, he is known for his portraits and nudes highlighting women during their daily activities: reading, sewing or writing. A journalist describes his paintings as "compositions" giving off "an impression of freshness and youth that he alone produces".
