17th century Dutch school, red macaw parrot and gray parakeet, perched on a red copper milk cane in an undergrowth. In the background, a landscape with a village. Oil on canvas, presented in a beautiful Louis XVI period carved oak frame gilded with gold leaf. Attributed to Matthias Withoos or his workshop.
Matthias Withoos, also known as Calzetta Bianca or Calzetti, born in Amersfoort (United Provinces) in 1627 and died in Hoorn in 1703, was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age. His style, close to that of Otto Marseus van Schrieck, can be recognized by the detail of the insects, reptiles and undergrowth in the foreground of his paintings (source: Wikipedia).
The green plants in the undergrowth framing the scene are typical of Withoos' decorations, here the subject of colorful parrots, a token of great exoticism in the 17th century, differing from other works by this painter who usually depicts darker birds. The photos show the quality and care taken to render the feathers naturalistically.
A fine large-format painting, a fine amateur piece, very decorative. Very good condition, painting foxed, minor old restorations.
