Venus and Love, French school circa 1750
Oil on canvas (perhaps a door overlay?) depicting Venus and Love in the guise of Cupid, her son.
Venus, goddess of love, seduction and beauty, is leaning half-naked, holding Love in her right arm.
In the background, two doves trying to mate, one of her attributes.
Her son Eros (or Cupid), naked, his quiver at his feet, prepares to prick the male pigeon with an arrow to aid mating.
From the Renaissance onwards, the Venusian theme was a favorite of painters and sculptors, who took up several motifs from the legend of Aphrodite.
