It is a painting realized between 1825 and 1841 (mark of the canvas dealer active in Paris at this period) probably on the subject of the death of President Duranti. After the assassination of the Duke of Guise, the Leagues attacked the king's supporters. In Toulouse at the beginning of 1589, he was looking for the president Jean-Etienne Duranti, first president of the parliament of Toulouse from 1581 to 1589. On February 10, 1589 he was shot outside the Dominican convent where he had taken refuge. Duranti appeared before his opponents in his official clothes and gave a speech to explain his point of view. But he was assassinated by the armed crowd.
