René Lelong was a painter and illustrator during the Belle Epoque and the Roaring Twenties. He studied at the Académie Julian from 1879 to 1891. Winner of a 3rd class medal at the 1895 Salon des artistes français, he became a member in 1898.
Lelong produced advertising posters and illustrated numerous books and texts, notably for the Nelson collection and the magazines Femina, Je sais tout, Lectures pour tous and L'Illustration.
Our painting is a design created around 1920 for a poster advertising Mulhouse "Cusenier" liqueurs ("Les bonnes liqueurs Cusenier sont dans la famille des agréments du dessert"!). Cusenier is a French spirits brand, founded in 1868 in Ornans (Doubs) by Eugène Cusenier, and now owned by the Pernod Ricard group.
Lelong's art is always imbued with lightness, charm and gaiety. Here, the scene exudes joie de vivre, with its fresh colors and relaxed, smiling attitudes. A perfect scene to illustrate the pleasure of enjoying a digestif with friends after a good meal!
