Scenes from Paul Scarron's Roman Comique.
The first scene shows Ragotin on horseback with his rifle firing involuntarily.
The second depicts Ragotin being removed from the chest where the maid had locked him.
This pair recalls the series of paintings created by Jean-Baptiste Pater to illustrate the work of Paul Scarron.
Jeaurat's genre paintings, in the style of David Teniers, were extremely popular. He is sometimes even called the French Teniers. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1733 and was appointed guardian of the royal painting collection at Versailles in 1767. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in the Louvre for the first time in 1737 and continued to do so until shortly before his death at the age of 90.
This pair of paintings was attributed to Jeaurat by the Millet Cabinet in Paris.
