-A and A. Bonafous-Murat, Maurice Dumont 1869-1899: painter-engraver, illustrator, poet and publisher of 'L'Épreuve', Historical Library of the city of Paris, 1991.

Symbolist painter, also known for his genre scenes and portraits, Jean Danguy began his career at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1884, becoming a student of Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. He won the Second Prix de Rome in 1889, as well as the “Heads and Expression” prize a year later. He then joined the workshop of Gustave Moreau, who was at the origin of the development of his symbolist sensitivity. Between 1887 and 1910, the artist participated in the Parisian Salons, then in the fifth edition of the Salon de la Rose+Croix in 1895. During this period, he also became interested in lithography. Several of his creations are published in the monthly newspaper ‘L’Épreuve- album d’art’. This artistic and literary review consisted of 12 issues (December 1894 to November 1895). Among the works of Maurice Denis, Puvis de Chavannes, and Félicien Rops, there are for example creations such as Le château de la Mort, among others.
After 1900, his style tended towards a realism with a very marked popular character, which is close to the achievements of Raffaëlli. He also works the landscape, often located in the surroundings of Paris and whose misty atmospheres underline the still persistent influence of symbolism. In 1913, he received the third medal from the Salon des Artistes français.
Taking place in a blue atmosphere, an angel places against him the column of flagellation, one of the attributes of Christ's passion. We notice that the artist takes a certain liberty here in this iconographic representation; it brings the celestial being closer to the feminine figure, very often a symbol of purity in symbolist circles.
A set of 196 works by the artist was dispersed by the Boisgirard study on October 26, 1998 at the Hôtel Drouot. Several of the artist's works are today kept in public collections such as the Carnavalet Museum or internationally, at the British Museum.
