Oil on canvas from the early 19th century. Reproduction of the painting by Jean Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) entitled “Innocence” executed in 1790 and exhibited at The Wallace Collection in London. The scene depicts a young woman and a lamb. “In addition to its religious connotations, the lamb in Western art is considered an attribute of innocence, gentleness, patience and humility. By representing a lamb, Greuze thus invests his charming model with the same qualities. These representations of young women cuddling animals, and thus suggesting their sensitivity, refer to the cult devoted to emotion in the eighteenth century by Rousseau and others. Greuze’s heroine thus appears in possession of the intoxicating combination of sexual innocence and emotional depth. » (Notice Wallace Collection)
