This 19th-century oil on canvas is a reworking of Jean Raymond Brascassat's "Taureau se frotttant contre un arbre" (Bull rubbing against a tree), exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1835. There's a name in the signature, but we can't read it.
This work was executed with great mastery and precision.
Jacques Raymond Brascassat, born Jacques Brascassat on August 30, 1804 in Bordeaux and died in Paris on February 28, 1867, was a French painter and aquafortist.
Note some rubbing of the paint, as well as craquelure and small fungi. The stuccoed gilded frame is damaged in many places.
The work is sold uncleaned and unrestored.
