Benezit :
Bergès Ernest Georges
Born in Bayonne. Painter of history, genre and portraits.
Pupil of Zo, Bonnat and Maignan, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1894 and 1913, winning a silver medal in 1900 and becoming a member. Promoted to Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1924. His first works were of a religious nature, including The Flight into Egypt, Saint Georges, Martyre de St léon de Bayonne. Later, he painted portraits and tableaux de mœurs of the Basque country and Spain.
Our painting shows an undressed young woman, certainly a model.
She is very sensual, the milky-white flesh color contrasting with the dark, chiaroscuro background.
