In 1854, he was awarded a third Premier Prix de Rome in painting for Abraham Washing the Feet of Three Angels. He was a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1855 to 1857. He was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by decree of June 29, 1867. His wife, Céline-Joséphine Bidard de La Noë, whose portrait he painted in a green dress, wrote several novels and short stories under the pseudonym Paria Korigan.
