Georges Devy was a late 19th century painter and illustrator. He worked for the newspaper l'Illustration. Devy, for example, represented a sculptor who presents the famous "Immodest Venus" discovered in 1864 on the "Laugerie-Basse" site. As an illustrator, Devy has contributed to several books, notably the voluminous book by Henri du Cleuziou "The Creation of Man and the First Ages of Humanity" based on archaeological research in the Dordogne on the site of Les Eyzies. An excellent draughtsman, Devy also worked at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris to produce anatomical plates in the 1870s.
In the 1880s Devy also made some paintings of romantic inspiration with figures in 18th century costumes as in our painting. We find there its qualities of drawing and realistic rendering. The landscape is reminiscent of Italy, perhaps the Bay of Naples and the sculpture evokes an archaeological site. The sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum were excavated around the middle of the 18th century.
