French school from the first half of the 19th century, important pastoral scene in the style of Berchem. It represents a landscape animated by numerous pieces of livestock: cows with pointed horns, sheep, donkey, amusing goat with a snarling look in the center of the composition, this improvised herd preparing to cross a ford under the leadership of two peasant women.

These compositions are typical of the genre of the Dutch painter Berchem, here taken up by a French painter.

The painting is presented in its superb frame with channels and egg stripes in wood and stucco gilded with gold leaf. On the back of the canvas is the signature of its supplier, the Maison Vallé in Paris, successor to Belot, active between 1841 and 1846, which allows us to date our painting very precisely.

The format is imposing, very furnishing. The colors are bright and cheerful, the animals are painted and represented scrupulously, with great care. The superb frame is imposing (nearly 20cm thick); it is a painting made for a castle or large private mansion.

Excellent condition, the cleaned painting is on its original canvas and in its original frame gilded with gold leaf (beautiful matt and shiny gilding), cleaned by our gilder.
