Benjamin Eugène Fichel:
Benjamin Eugène Fichel was the son of Moïse Mayer Fichel and Lili Abigaïl Sasias. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on September 27, 1841, where he studied under Paul de Laroche and Martin Drolling.
He made his debut at the 1849 Salon and received a third-class medal in 1857, with a recall in 1861. He won another medal in 1869 and exhibited at the Salon until 1895. Benjamin Eugène Fichel was a genre and portrait painter. His students included Jeanne Samson, who first exhibited at the Salon in 1869, whom he married.
His genre scenes show the influence of Ernest Messonnier, whose paintings he copied. He depicted amiable anecdotes in the manner of 17th- and 18th-century Dutch painters. This type of painting captivated his contemporaries with its firm execution and the quality of its facial expressions.
He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1870.
