Beautiful period frame in gilded wood
The painting is described in the sale of the vast collection (726 numbers) after "cession of trade" of the merchant Jules-Nicolas Moyon in 1837. This sale took place in three parts spread over three months between January and March 1837 at the Palais de the Stock Exchange in Paris. The catalog presented itself as the “Catalogue of a beautiful and numerous collection of modern paintings and some beautiful old paintings after transfer of Mr. Moyon’s business”. Romantic painters were naturally well represented there and in particular thirty-four paintings by Mr. Jules Jollivet, number 441 of which in the sale is described as follows: “The wife of a bandit takes jewelry from a cassette which she shows to her husband. Picture of an energetic color”.
This painting noticed in the catalog and with a very pleasant subject has undoubtedly given rise to copies. We know that Moyon gave his paintings to be copied in workshops.
