Friend of Gérard de Nerval, Arsène Houssaye and Théophile Gautier. In 1840, he left for Constantinople, where he was joined by Nerval. He returned to France around 1843. He also pursued an administrative career, becoming postmaster in Beirut in 1848, and remaining in Lebanon until 1864. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1833 to 1848. On his return to France, he produced a series of scenes of Turkish people and landscapes for the magazine l'Illustration. In 1846, with a text by Théophile Gautier, he published an album entitled La Turquie.
