Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin, born August 15, 1802 in Paris and died April 11, 1880 in Boulogne-Billancourt, is a French painter.
A student at the École des Beaux Arts, he trained under the direction of Girodet-Trioson. Later he was influenced by the Romantic school. He exhibited in London, at the Royal Academy. He won medals in 1824, 1848 and 1885. Gudin was decorated with the Legion of Honor.
He executed a large number of paintings for the king's household, he worked for the Duke of Orleans and for several other important figures, both in France and abroad.
Several museums in France and abroad preserve his works.

Our painting represents the rescue of a ship in distress.
The effect of the storm is very well rendered, the wind, the rain, the gusts, the clouds, the light with these sparkling reflections like blades.
We can distinguish the faces of the sailors, in the effort and the anguish.
The atmosphere is extremely well rendered, we have the impression of being there.
