biography :
Benoît Desprey
French
1902-1976
Benoît Desprey was a French painter born in Arras in 1902.
His family ran a photography, color and painting supplies business at 40 rue Croix Belle-Porte in Saint-Quentin. Benoît Desprey spent his early childhood in contact with artists and their work. His father organized an annual regional Salon de peinture, where renowned painters such as Rochegrosse, Harpignies, Boggs, Noirot and Lucien Jonas exhibited.
Desprey trained as a painter in Lucien Jonas's studio. His studio was always located in Saint-Quentin, but he exhibited in Paris and abroad, traveling extensively in search of new subjects. He loved to paint from the motif, particularly his seascapes. He took part in the Salon d'Automne in 1931.
He died in Saint-Quentin in 1976.
In 2001, a retrospective of the painter's works was held at Espace Saint-Jacques, Saint-Quentin.
