Manuel Thomson Ortiz was born in Valparaíso, Chile in 1875 and died in Paris in 1953. Son of Manuel Tomás Thomson Puerto Mariño, hero of the Pacific War campaigns, he was orphaned at the age of five. While still a teenager, he entered the School of Fine Arts where he was a pupil of Juan Mochi and Cosme San Martín. His great skill and talent made him triumph in official salons, appearing on the list of first prizes in 1894. In 1902, the Chilean government granted him a scholarship to study art in Paris. He was a pupil of the master Jean Paul Laurens. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1909, 1910, 1911 and 1912.
