French school of the 19th century, marine representing a return from fishing, boats moored in a salt marsh, with a cottage. The scene is animated by a multitude of characters, very finely executed. The painting is presented in its rich original frame gilded with gold leaf. First half of the 19th century: the painting bears the Goureau signature at the bottom left.
Charles Goureau, painter born in Paris in 1797 (died in 1834?), student of Couder and Desmoulins. He exhibited at the Salon from 1824 to 1834, views generally taken in the Pyrenees and seascapes, like our painting. The style is very close to the works of Eugène Isabey (1803-1886).
Beautiful painting, in excellent condition, painting on its original canvas cleaned by our restorer, as well as the superb frame with dazzling gilding.
