    Rare painting by SWIEYKOWSKI Alfred
Of Russo-Polish origin from Kiew on his father's side and Belgian on his mother's, Alfred Swieykowski was born on September 21, 18691. He was first registered under the name of his mother, Anastasie Augustine Debolle (1834-1909), before being recognized by his father, Hippolyte de Swieykowski (1827-1897), according to the deed signed in Paris in January 18732.
Swieykowski (sometimes spelled Swiejkowski) was a pupil of Fernand Cormon. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1894 to 1924 (honorable mention in 18963).
After the death of his parents (1897 and 1909), he moved from no. 46 rue Jouffroy-d'Abbans to no. 56 rue Nollet. In 1918, he married Suzanne Germaine Walter (1885-1965)4.
In 1921, on the death of his first cousin, Count Félix-Nicolas Potocki, he received an annuity of 30,000 francs5.
He began exhibiting at the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1926. He became a member and sociétaire of this society in 1927. He won a silver medal at the 1937 Universal Exhibition in Paris. At first, he painted in a classical style, then post-impressionist, adopting a style with touches reminiscent of fauvism.
He treated a wide range of subjects, but was above all a landscape painter: Paris, Haute-Savoie, Normandy and Brittany were his favorite regions. He also excelled in intimate interior scenes, portraits of his family and friends, and bouquets of flowers.
He died on May 18, 1953, at the age of 83,
His paintings were only signed in the second half of his life, and when they were intended for exhibitions, which is why many of his works are not listed. The Association of Friends of Alfred Swieykowski was founded in 2004. A non-profit organization, its aim is to locate and exhibit paintings by this little-known artist. Some 600 of his works have been found
Oil on canvas signed lower right.
