This painting by Artur Markowicz depicts a natural landscape with a stream flowing through a forest. The stream meanders between moss-covered rocks, and trees with yellow and green leaves line its banks. The sky is partially visible through the trees, suggesting a soft, diffused light. The colors used are mainly greens, yellows and blues, creating a peaceful, serene atmosphere. The molded gold frame adds a touch of elegance to the work, which is signed lower right.
Artur Markowicz (1872-1934) was a Polish artist known for his many pastels, portraits and street scenes in Krakow's historic Kazimierz district. He was born into a merchant family and studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts from 1886 to 1895. From 1896 to 1903, he lived in Germany and studied art at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts with Frank Stuck. He then moved to Paris, finishing at the École des Beaux-Arts with Jean-Léon Gérôme. He also exhibited his paintings at the Salons of 1900, 1901, 1903 and 1904. Markowicz returned to Krakow in 1904 and set up a studio in the historic Kazimierz district. He traveled to Jerusalem in 1907-1908, where the Bezalel Academy had just opened, and then to other parts of Europe until 1914. He was also a member of the "Société des amis des beaux-arts de Cracovie" and the "Société pour l'encouragement des beaux-arts". After 1930, he was honorary president of the "Jewish Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts". His Jewish scenes and character studies show the unique originality of his style, influenced by Symbolism with elements of Expressionism. Markowicz died in Krakow in 1934 at the age of 62.
