Francesco Casanova was born on 1 June 1727 in London, where his mother first appeared on stage as an actress. It has been claimed that he was the illegitimate son of King George II. He was the younger brother of Giacomo Casanova. He was in his time such a famous painter of battles that at the time it was his brother Giacomo who was often credited for his relationship "with the famous painter", but this hard-earned fame faded soon after his death. He died in poverty, although having had clients such as the Prince de Condé and Catherine II of Russia, he had earned large sums of money, but his very disorderly life also led him to squander his enormous earnings. Settled in Paris in 1751, approved by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture on August 22, 1761, he was received there on May 28, 1763 with his Cavalry Combat as a reception piece.
The painter and collector Jacques Augustin de Silvestre (1719-1809), owned two paintings by him: "Landscape enriched with ruins with a shepherd, cows and sheep near a fountain". (Wikipedia).
This painter is in the collections of many museums around the world.
The painting presented today seems to be this one and to have been reframed in the 19th century. The engraving that accompanies it reproduces the painting exactly, and mentions "painted by Casanova, painter of the king" and "engraved by Laurent and finished with a burin by Le Vasseur engraver of the king", both artists of the 18th century, which authenticates the painting.
In perfect condition, the painting measures 36.5 cm wide by 36 cm high without frame (52.5 x 55 H with frame), the framed engraving 48.5 x H 46.5.
