For obvious stylistic and qualitative reasons, this composition must be attributed to the pictorial production of the Neapolitan Nicola Viso, supported by the confirmation of the particular type of figures, as well as the inventiveness and execution of the architectures.
This is a highly representative work by Viso, as all aspects of his versatile personality are joyfully brought together here: the landscape painter painting ancient ruins with the figurist. The subject also fits in with the painter's typical compositions, in which suggestive architectural whims were combined with religious themes; in our case, the architectural ruins of an imposing temple are the backdrop for the rest of the Holy Family, accompanied by three floating angels.
The light, airy atmosphere, landscape articulation, delicate chromatic harmony and luminosity suggest a mid-eighteenth-century date.
The painting is probably the counterpart to the work offered by Christie's (Old Master Paintings, Milan, Palazzo Clerici November 28, 2007), depicting a similar architectural caprice, with the same measurements, and with the episode of the Visitation.
