French school from the beginning of the 19th century, very fine landscape or seascape animated by numerous characters: it is a master fisherman or fish merchant who sells the fruit of his fishing to two women and their donkeys. In the background the fisherman's wife spins wool in front of the door of her cottage and speaks to an apprentice who brings another basket of fish. On the left the fishing nets are drying. On the left, the seaside is bustling with numerous boats. The scene is probably taken in Normandy.
Oil on mahogany panel from the first half of the 19th century; the painting is presented in its very beautiful original channeled frame in wood and stucco gilded with gold leaf. It is signed lower left: LA Gerard.
Louis Auguste Gérard, landscape painter, wood engraver, and lithographer, born in Versailles on February 5, 1782, died in 1862. Student of Bertin, he exhibited at the Salon from 1819 to 1843.
