Henri Gonnard (1834-1912) oil on canvas 19th century View of the Avignon Bridge
Superb view of the Palais des Papes and the old bridge of Avignon
This view is pre-Raphaelist in the warm tones of the South of France.
In the foreground is a sandy bank topped by an embankment planted with trees, reminiscent in composition and coloring of Bertin's work.
Following the Rhône, we see the Palais des Papes in the warm light of a late summer's day.
In his composition, Henri Gonnard has succeeded in depicting a bridge that would eventually be finished.

Henri Gonnard:
Jean Henri Gonnard was born in Montbrison in 1834, the son of Claude Gonnard, a cloth merchant and later banker.
He was a pupil at Verrières, then at the Argentière seminary. He considered entering the Beaux-Arts in Lyon, but his family dissuaded him. He then joined the General Treasury in Saint-Etienne. In 1866, he became secretary to the Saint-Etienne town council. In 1867, he married a notary's daughter in Pontaumur. From 1872 to 1886, he was curator of the Saint-Etienne Museum of Art and Industry. In 1877, he became an Officier d'Académie. He took early retirement on April 1, 1886. He then devoted himself to his passions: history, drawing and painting. He died in Saint-Etienne in 1912. He left his name to the street linking the museum to the former Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
