Born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1907, Hans Seiler spent his childhood in Berne, where his father was a doctor. In 1924, on the advice of the curator of the Berne Museum, who had noticed his sketchbooks, he went to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he first took sculpture classes. He worked with one of Rodin's pupils, Madame Bardet, who advised him to go to Paris and devote himself to painting. In 1927, he entered the Académie Ranson, where he studied with Bissière until 1930. He also befriended Gromaire, who remained a friend throughout his life. From 1930 onwards, he exhibited at several salons and in Switzerland. After a long hiatus during the war, he exhibited at Galerie Jeanne Bucher in 1948, and at Galerie Roque from 1950 to 1970. He then exhibited at Galerie de Bellechasse, later Galerie Bellint, until his death. He had exhibitions abroad (Bettie Thommen gallery in Basel, Verena Muller in Berne, Redfern gallery in London, Haaken gallery in Oslo, Galerie Blanche in Stockholm, in Luxembourg... and at the Salon d'Automne, Salon de Mai, Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and FIAC. The Musée Bonnat in Bayonne devoted a retrospective to him in the summer of 1986. He died accidentally in early August during this retrospective.
