French School of the 19th century, mountain landscape painting representing the Grande Chartreuse monastery, in the Chartreuse massif, Isère near Grenoble. It is presented in a very rich wooden and stucco frame gilded with museum quality gold leaf.
Our painting represents with photographic precision one of the mythical monuments most dear to the hearts of Grenoblois. The site where the scene was painted is well known to hikers, it is the bench where people still sit today some 140 years after this monument was painted.
Ernest-Victor Hareux is one of the great painters of the Dauphinois school of the 19th century. Born in Paris in 1847 and died in Grenoble in 1909, he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1868 and obtained a medal in 1880. Hareux is a landscape painter, who essentially became a mountain painter after his meeting with the greatest of painters. Dauphinois, Abbot Laurent Guétal who invited him to join him in Grenoble in 1887, where he remained until his death in 1909. Ernest Hareux joined the Dauphinoise school with his friends Ravanat, Bertier and Achard. He is best known for his mountain paintings. A founding member of the Society of Mountain Painters, he saw in Alpine landscapes a very imposing decorative power which lends itself admirably to theatrical or panoramic paintings.
Our painting is undoubtedly a major piece in the work of Ernest Hareux, an original work that we brought back from the United States where it was presented as a "medieval mountain village"...
