    Denis Henri Ponchon is the son of Denis Ernest Ponchon, a tramway employee, and Octavie Marie Coussement.
    A decorative painter at the age of twenty, he was exempted from military service under the article (ouvrier d'art) and exhibited at the Salon from 1908 [In 1914, he was living in Tourcoing.
    When the First World War was declared, he was mobilized. Appointed sergeant in October 1914, he was wounded by shrapnel in June 1915 at Hébuterne. Unable to walk properly, he was sent home, but returned to the capital. He was cited in the regimental order (no. 146 of June 17, 1915) and awarded the Croix de Guerre.
    In Paris, he studied with Fernand Cormon.
    In 1916, he married Claire Suzanne Rebondy in Paris, with painter Jean-Joseph Weerts as best man.
    He received an honorable mention in 1920, a silver medal in 1924 and the Prix Rosa Bonheur in 1937.
    He died at his home on rue Alain-Chartier in December 1948, aged 69[6]. He is buried in the Clamart communal cemetery.
