Lipót Böhm was a French-Hungarian painter, member of the Roman Scholarship Winning Artists Group along with Judit Reigl, Simon Hantai, Antal Bíró, Sándor Zugor and Paul Hargitai. They all began their studies together at the Academy of Fine Arts under the wing of their master, István Szőnyi.
Böhm and Bíró later became Szőnyi's secondary instructor.
All members of the Roman Scholarship Winning Artists Group were very close friends. They emigrated to Paris and created their art together.
Since they decided to leave socialist Hungary and move to Paris so that they could create in freedom, the regime treated them like misfits: no one mentioned their names, no one exhibited their works. They were forgotten.
The director of the Hungarian Academy in Rome, Tibor Kardos, believed in their talent, so he decided to help the group by organizing exhibitions for them, which gained significant recognition. His patronage enriched the culture of Europe with the works of these outstanding Hungarian talents.
About his art
Constructive forms of compositions have always characterized his art. He paints figurative paintings and portraits with rich and vibrant colors, then after the 1980s he turns to geometric abstraction.
