COLLAGE BY ROGER DERIEUX TITLE "GRAVE" ON BACK BEARS NUMBER 349 DATE 93. 30X30CM
VERY REFINED WORK
Born in Paris in 1922, after living and working in Paris and the Ardèche, Roger Dérieux set up his studio in Pern, Lot, in 2009. A lover of poetry, a friend of Picabia and Ponge, a fellow traveler with Debré, Poliakoff, Estève and Soulages, with whom he participated in the most popular artistic events of the post-war period, Roger Dérieux developed a pictorial language that made him stand out from the rest. From the outset, he pursued an independent path towards an increasingly stripped-down language. From an expression that emphasized color and was open to the outside world, he came to internalize and abandon any directly legible representation.
His trademark is classical elegance, economy of means and chromatic subtlety. His repertoire (still lifes, figures in the studio, Nordic and industrial landscapes, skies carried by windswept valleys) is striking for its expressive fulgurances and harmonic audacity. His increasingly allusive "Cities" series led him to collage, which since the 1980s has been a direct extension of painting. Rarely using pre-existing elements, preparing and painting in oil the papers he uses as he works, he often mixes painting and collage, arranging his fine colored papers into abstract figures of perfect balance.
In 1985, the painter began a major series of collages, stripped of all figurative elements. This marked a turning point in the orientation of his work, initially under the sign of Kurt Schwitters, about whom Imre Pan had spoken to him a great deal.
