* Fred (Frédéric Victor) Zeller (1912-2003),
was a French politician and painter. A Trotskyite activist in the 1930s-40s, he was elected head of the Grand Orient de France (GODF) in 1971, a position he held until 1973. He studied at the École supérieure des Arts décoratifs de la rue d'Ulm. He became involved in the socialist movement, joining the Socialist Students in 1931, then the Socialist Youth and finally the SFIO. He later became a Trotskyite. After the war, he briefly joined the Internationalist Communist Party, from September 1946 to the end of 1947. He then gradually withdrew from militant action to devote himself to painting, on the borderline between surrealism and symbolism. In 1948, he retired to Èze-Village, where two years later he established a local history museum. In 2009, a retrospective exhibition of his pictorial work was held at the ENSAM teaching and research center in Chalons en Champagne.
