OIL ON CANVAS CIRCA 80. 60X73CM "LA VIE" (LIFE)
Kenji Yoshida's paintings combine modernist abstraction with the metal-leaf tradition of Japanese screens. The themes of his work have been described as cosmic and life-affirming. His work is on permanent display at London's October Gallery.
Born in 1924 in Ikeda City, Osaka, Yoshida studied art until he was interrupted by the Second World War. He was conscripted in 1943 and appointed a kamikaze pilot, narrowly avoiding death at the end of the war. Yoshida moved to Paris in 1964. There, he studied graphic arts with Stanley William Hayter and discovered the work of spiritual abstract expressionists such as Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko.
Yoshida's solo exhibitions include shows at the British Museum (1993), the Museo de Arte Moderno (1997) and the Château Royal de Blois (2006).
