Painter and sculptor born in London on December 16, 1920 of Irish parents, Duncan studied at the Slade School of London from 1944 to 1949 and subsequently taught at the Guildford School of Art. However, realizing the difficulty, if not impossibility, of reconciling teaching and painting, he decided to leave England and settle in Paris in 1951.
His works resemble Cobra's gestural painting in their violence and thick paste thrown at the canvas. His works of the 60s represent a work on matter that corresponds to his mystical inspiration, work on the duality of body and spirit. This unclassifiable painter is much appreciated by collectors in the Nordic and Anglo-Saxon countries, where he has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums. He took part in the 1958 Brussels World's Fair and the 1967 Montreal World's Fair, among others.
"Duncan's painting is distinctly expressionist, using a technique akin to dripping, in which stains and sprays give rise to signs: heads, flowers, eyes, which in certain periods can also be compared to the graffiti of Art Brut". (Bénézit dictionary).
