    KABUTO WAR HELMET set with mempo and maedate
    Suji-bachi type
    Japan - Edo period (1603-1868)
    Lacquer, metal, wood, silk laces and horsehair

    Suji-bachi type kabuto featuring a helmet (hachi) with 38 radiating blades, a three-degree tehen and a pair of short, lacquered side wings (fukigaeshi) decorated with môn. The front of the helmet features a removable wooden ornament called a maedate. It features a lacquered wooden lyre.
    The neck cover (shikiro), articulated with five slats, is particularly large.
    The interior is lined with its own fabric.

    The kabuto is completed with a natural iron facial protector, called a mempo; the nose is removable; it wears a light horsehair moustache and the teeth are gilded. The interior is lacquered red. The gorgerin has four blades.

    The kabuto is a traditional object in Japanese culture. An integral part of military armor, it was worn by high-ranking samurai.
