NAVY OFFICER'S DAGGER, model 1883
Japan
Showa period (1926-1989)
Steel, leather, gilded brass
Total length: 39; Blade length: 22.2 cm
Steel dagger with a groove and single edge whose fuse – with a removable peg in the shape of cherry blossoms – ends in a pommel in the shape of a rounded helmet, also topped with a cherry blossom. Guard with inverted quillons, marked with the hallmark of the Suya Company of Tokyo – probably a subcontractor of the arsenal.
Lacquered leather scabbard, with two bail rings, and fitted with a release button above a cherry blossom that is animated by the gilded brass chappe – motif repeated on both sides. Gilded brass rivet, cut and animated with two cherry blossoms.
These daggers were introduced into the Navy by the commission of October 26, 1883.
