Japan, end of the Edo period (1603-1868), very pretty “Tsuba” Samurai sword hilt in shakudo, a noble copper alloy containing 3 to 7% gold mainly used for its black-purple patina appearance lacquered. This tsuba is delicately decorated on both sides with slightly different patterns of foliage and flowers with gold highlights on a background of small raised dots. Very good quality work.
