Saxony, Germany
Late 17th - early 18th century
Wood, bone, antler and wrought iron
Length : 78 ; L. : 22 ; Thickness : 3,5 cm
(restorations and old accidents)
The axe iron is flat, with one edge, punched with five marks of tâcheron and extended in a blunt spade. It is openworked three times with a trefoil and cupules, and provided with an oval socket with stop and oval sides.
The fruitwood handle is entirely inlaid with bone and antler inserts cut into lozenges, rods and rectangular cartouches riveted with small iron nails. These inserts are engraved with different stages of the miner's work, carrying different tools, notably picks or hammers.
The pommel is carved from a section of bent antler finely engraved and finished in a button. It is animated on both sides by two miners bearing the Saxon coat of arms.
