Antique leather cordite bucket, royal navy ammunition carrier, UK coat of arms. United Kingdom 19th century

Cordite buckets were used by the British Navy to transport cordite, a propellant used to replace gunpowder. Due to their purpose, cordite buckets were constructed with specific materials: cork, fabric and leather. Leather was used on the outside to protect the explosive from water damage and was glued to the cork, which is a fire resistant material. Inside, the cap was covered with canvas to seal the cap. Originally, the bucket would have had a lid. The buckets were gripped and moved using the handle fixed with copper rivets. This particular item is in good condition, the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom still in very good condition.
