Benjamin is accused of theft
Joseph ordered the steward of his house: Fill the bags of these men with as much food as they can hold, and put each person's money in the mouth of his bag. You will put my cup, the silver cup, at the opening of the sack of the youngest, with the money from his grain.
The steward carried out Joseph's orders. The next morning, as soon as it was light, these people were let go with their donkeys. They had just left the city, and were not yet far from it, when Joseph said to his steward: Go, pursue these people! When you have reached them, you will ask them: “Why have you returned evil for good? Why did you steal the cup that my master uses for drinking and for reading omens? You have done wrong. »
So the steward caught up with them and spoke to them as his master had told him. They answered him: Why does my lord say such a thing? Your servants never thought of committing such an action! We have brought to you from the land of Canaan the money that we found when we opened our bags. Why then should we steal silver or gold from your master's house? May any of your servants with whom this cup is found be put to death, and may we ourselves become slaves to my lord!
The steward replied: Good! I'll take your word for it! The one on whom it is found will be my slave, but the others will be exonerated.
They hastened to each place their bag on the ground and open it. The steward searched their bags, starting with that of the eldest and ending with that of the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin's bag. 13 They tore their clothes, each man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city.
Judah went with his brothers to the house of Joseph; this one was still there; they prostrated themselves on the ground before him. 15 Joseph said to them, What have you done there? Didn't you know that a man like me has the power of divination?
Judah said: What shall we answer to my lord? What would we say? How can we justify ourselves? God has exposed the fault of your servants. Here then are we, my lord's slaves, and he who had the cup in his bag.
But Joseph declared: It would never occur to me to act like this! The man in whose bag the cup was found will be my slave; but you, return quietly to your father.
