Important fountain or baptismal water reserve* Haute Epoque, in lead (and pewter), from a religious community in the region of Mâcon (Burgundy), circa 1500, late 15th-early 16th centuries.
Of architectural form with a parallelepipedic body surmounted by an applied roof; body decorated with a series of hooked gables separated by buttresses on a molded base; roof with hooked ridges, ornamental frieze of finials, openwork crest of finials, pinnacle with four volutes; opening on the roof in front closed by a shutter rising from four lobes. Expertise Ms. Fligny (Paris).
This fountain is in good general condition and is of exceptional quality. Its decoration and size make it a rare piece of Catholic worship. This piece went up for sale at public auction about thirty years ago (description and photo of the period catalog visible in the last photo).
A note: Letters RG with star engraved on the roof (old but later engraving), tap removed, traces of repair in the bottom, some deformations at the top pinnacles, some shocks and wear of time, look at the photos.
* Baptismal water tank: covered container, generally made of metal (copper or lead) allowing the baptismal water to be stored when it is not contained directly in the tank of the baptismal font. (Excerpt from "Religious Objects of Catholic Worship" Editions du Patrimoine)
