Splendid Wall Lamp by Jean-Joseph de Saint Germain, (1719 - 1791)

Famous Parisian Bronzier from the Middle of the 18th century.
It occupies a central place in the very active world of Parisian foundry-engravers in the mid-18th century. More particularly specialized in the production of clock cases entirely in gilded bronze, he left an important body of work during his long career. He achieved mastery in 1746. His clientele included cabinetmakers, watchmakers, merchants and a wealthy private clientele. One of his first clients was certainly his father, to whom he supplied bronzes for cabinetmaking furniture. Furthermore, Saint-Germain collaborated in particular from 1752 with the cabinetmaker Antoine Foulet who also specialized in clock cases. Knowing his specialty, Saint-Germain built up an important
aunt clientele of watchmakers. No less than seventy, Parisians and provincials, could be listed, among which the most skillful, such as Jacques Gudin, Jean-Baptiste Dutertre, François Viger, Jean-Baptiste Baillon, the Lenoirs, Michel Stollenwerck, the Le Roys, the Balthazars , Ferdinand Berthous,
Jacques Roques...Saint-Germain supplies, directly or through watchmakers, gilders or haberdashery merchants such as Lazare Duvaux, a very high-ranking clientele. We can cite, in addition to the Duchess of Orléans, the Dukes of Tallard and Pralins, the Marquises of Pange and Eaubonne, or one of the most famous collectors of the 18th century, the financier Blondel de Gagny. The Royal Furniture Guard was also a client of Saint-
Germain; the latter notably delivered in August 1763 a clock representing the Rape of Europe which was to appear, until the Revolution, in the large cabinet of Madame Victoire, one of the daughters of Louis XV residing at Versailles. His trade was not limited to the kingdom. The Duchess of Parma, another daughter of Louis One of his most famous creations, the Genius of Denmark clock, was commissioned by the sovereign of that country, Frederick V, in 1765, and he was associated with the sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet for the creation of this very ambitious work. . Alongside its watchmaking creations, Saint-Germain also creates numerous furniture bronzes – including andirons, wall lights, and candelabra – always displaying the same creativity and demonstrating its exceptional bronze-making talents. He retired from business in 1776.
