Very rare pair of table candlesticks in finely chiseled and gilded bronze.
Taking the form of an antique gadrooned urn, decorated with lions' muzzles held on their clawed feet, each torch rests on a fluted circular base, with a projection, the top of which is covered with acanthus leaves. The latter is affixed to a belt of delicate streaks highlighted with a row of pearls.
Superb work of carving and matte and shiny gilding.
The composition of this model of torches takes up the decorative elements of the large pair of torches attributed to the illustrious bronzier François Rémond. The latter corresponds to a watercolor by Jean-Démosthène Dugourc, kept at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. (illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Band I, Munich, 1986, p.287, fig.4.15.6).
Very good state of conservation.
Beautiful original mercury gilding.
First third of the 19th century.
Dimensions:
Height: 9cm
Base diameter: 7.5 cm

François Rémond (1747-1812, master in 1774):
He was one of the most talented and important bronze master gilders and carvers in the Paris market between 1778 and 1805, the period during which he carried out his activity.
His turnover amounted to 161,000 Tourney pounds in 1784, the merchant-merchant Dominique Daguerre alone paid him the sum of 275,000 Tourney pounds for the years 1786-1788.
François Rémond also collaborated with Martin-Eloi Lignereux.
Working as both a caster and gilder, he was able to exercise considerable artistic control over his production.
Details that are less well known, François Rémond's activity was twofold: on the one hand he supplied raw materials and journeyman days to a foundry which resold him the cast iron; on the other hand, he had this cast iron transformed and he marketed the pieces thus worked and transformed either semi-finished, or gilded and chiseled in his own workshops.
At the forefront of Daguerre's regular clients are the cabinetmakers Roentgen (with whom Rémond was privileged in supplying him with most of the ornamental bronzes), Riesner, Frost, the goldsmith Clément, the engraver Gouthière, the watchmakers Lepaute and Lépine.
He worked, undoubtedly on models by Bélanger, for the Comte d'Artois (works at Bagatelle and at the Palais du Temple) and for Baudard de Sainte-James; also for the architects Cellerier and Ledoux, and for Thélusson, clients of the latter.
Among his important clients, we also note Queen Marie-Antoinette, the Count of Artois, the Count of Adhémar, the Prince of Soubise, the Dukes of Orléans, Laval and Penthièvre, the Duchess of Lauzun, the Marquise de Nicolaÿ, the intendant of Cypierre, the financier Paris de Montmartel, Letizia Bonaparte and Princess Kinsky.
Account registers allow you to track your activity for around thirty years; they constitute a mine of information for art historians who can identify his works.
For information: The archives of François Rémond were purchased by the National Archives in 1983. Extreme dates of the documents: 1798-1812. Freely communicable.
