Pair of large gilt bronze chased Athenian candelabras, Directoire period.
The base is in the form of a tripod Athenian with mermaid protuberances, each ending in a hock.
Three female tritons hold the cassolette decorated with a garland of oak leaves all around and topped with a removable lid adorned with a pine cone.
This holds the three light arms simulating hunting horns, the ends of which each support a wick chiselled with long water leaves.
These rare Athenian candelabras are similar to models by Pierre Gouthière or Pierre-Philippe Thomire.
Several examples of similar design can be found in the vergoldete bronzen reference book, pages 264 to 271.
Fine condition.
Original mercury gilding, normal wear, not cleaned.
Late 18th century, between 1790 and 1800.
