Pair of Louis XV style gilt bronze candlesticks by Slodtz Napoléon III 19th century

Pair of Louis XV style Rocaille candlesticks in chased and gilded bronze from a Slodtz model. Beautifully proportioned.

SÉBASTIEN-ANTOINE SLODTZ (1695-1754): best known as a draughtsman, he was instrumental in the development of the Rocaille style at the French court, thanks to his role in the Menus Plaisirs and his official position as draughtsman of the king's chamber and cabinet, which he received on the death of Meissonnier.

Original two-tone matte and glossy gilding and guilloché parts, fine condition. Very fine execution and high-quality chasing. Superb Dimensions Height: 28 cm Diameter Large base: 16 cm France Napoleon III period 19th century.

Typical 18th-century Slodtz candlestick architecture inspired by Meissonnier's Rocaille style:

Original bobéche with hollow basin and stylized acanthus leaf decoration.

Very handsome molded swivel spout with acanthus leaf scrolls and shower foot.

Attractive central shaft composed of ascending and descending elements, with a wide bulge at the top in three parts decorated with gadroons and acanthus leaves, and a large shell with cartouche and conch. The whole is richly molded and decorated.
Reminiscent of shell and foliage decoration on the bottom, it stands on a shower foot.

Magnificent, wide, round base with beautiful bell-shaped, stepped relief, very typical of this model, richly decorated with butterflies and insects and numerous decorations and moldings such as shells, acanthus, scrolls, foliage, flowers and fruit, volutes, scrolls, wheat, staples, all magnificently set in a permanent, lively movement typical of this great Rocaille style.

Condition report: Excellent original condition! Beautiful chasing, gilding in two shades of matte and gloss, tiny traces of use and age.
