Beautiful pair of richly chased ormolu torches, 31 cm high.
Like the columns of Marcus Aurelius and Trajan, the shaft features chased decoration of winged sphinxes, lyres, anthemions and foliage. Emerging from the base on a fluted pedestal and embellished with acanthus leaves, it also features a quartet of cartouches adorned with a cornucopia entwined between two dolphins and a flame from Olympus between olive branches and ribbons.
The flared top forming the bobèche alternates between a frieze of water leaves, acanthus leaves and fluting.
The base, in turn, hosts a round of chariots of Love, some harnessed to winged griffins, others to winged horses.
Empire-Restoration period circa 1815-1820
Very good condition
Inventory or collection marks in black ink under the base.
