Here's an exceptional pair of monogrammed porcelain torches. They are Restoration-inspired, decorated with caryatids, columns and Corinthian capitals.
They are signed Rihouet rue de la Paix and JP on the inside of the base. These are exceptional, large-scale, spectacular pieces.
Jacob Mardochée (1797-1868), better known by his pseudonym Jacob Petit, which he adopted in 1816, was a leading figure on the French ornamental porcelain scene. He trained in the studio of painter Antoine Gros, a pupil of David, then became director of the Manufacture de porcelaine de Fontainebleau before devoting himself entirely to ornamental porcelain. To this day, he is highly prized by collectors for the quality of his creations and the originality of his forms.
Louis Marie François Rihouët began his activity in 1818, and in 1824 obtained the title of faïencier du Roi. It was at this time that he moved his establishment to 7, rue de la Paix. Rihouët porcelain, with or without address, is of the highest quality. For the most part, they are table services, with a figure or coat of arms, as Rihouët had a select and wealthy clientele, including the King of Portugal.
Unfortunately, these candelabra present a number of accidents (visible in the photos): one foot is missing, one figure is missing, the barrels at the top and bottom are missing, one has a through crack on the bowl, the other has stains on the underside of the bowl, the crowns of the figures are grained and worn, the central light is slightly missing, and there is rubbing and traces of use throughout.
Note that the threaded rods need to be tightened or replaced, and there is some play on both candelabra.
